Google Maps Gives Attitude When Asked “Are We There Yet?”
If you’re on a road trip and you nag Google Maps enough, it will have a few choice words for you. The latest update to Google Maps on Android carries a hidden Easter egg when you ask, “Are we there yet?”.
The maps service will respond, in a line true to Chevy Chase’s iconic line in National Lampoon’s Vacation, “If you ask me again, we won’t stop for ice cream.”
We tested out the feature, which was surfaced by Android Police. Currently, this only works on Android phones; iOS devices don’t have to option to use dictation within the app.
To try for yoursef, set Google Maps on your Android device to give you turn-by-turn navigation directions. Then hit the dictation button (the microphone icon in the top right of the app) and ask, “Are we there yet?”
At first, Google will give you a polite estimate for how much time is left until you arrive at your destination. Ask it again and it will give you a blunt “no.”
Ask one more time, and it’s another “no.” Then ask for a fourth time, and it gets sassy, invoking the National Lampoon’s Vacation reference.
Google loves to insert fun features and games into its products. Last year, it placed images of Pokémon throughout their maps and challenged users to catch ’em all for an April Fools’ Day stunt.
