Netflix Revamps Windows 10 App with Cortana Voice Commands
Netflix’s new Window 10 app is more than just a pretty makeover. The video streaming app has been completely rewritten from the ground up as a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app, which allows it to run on devices of all sizes from PCs to tablets, to smartphones (in the “near future”) running Windows 10. The new Netflix app also supports Cortana, Windows 10’s voice assistant.
“Our members on Windows run across many different screen sizes, resolutions and scaling factors,” the company wrote in a blog post detailing the new app. “The new version of the application uses a responsive layout to optimize the size and placement of items based on the window size and scaling factor.”
With Cortana, users can search for content simply by saying a command like “Netflix find Orange is the New Black.” Cortana will launch the app — if it isn’t already open — and bring up the TV series.
In addition to voice commands, the new Netflix Windows 10 app supports vertical and horizontal scrolling through categories and items within each category, respectively.
Clicking into each video’s detailed view also displays larger artwork and suggestions for additional content.
The app is also smart enough to know what kind of input you’re using. If you’re using a mouse to browse content, paginated scrolling within a row is switched on. And when you’re using a touchscreen-enabled device, inertial scrolling within rows using gestures is enabled.
The new Netflix app for Windows 10 devices is available for free in the Windows Store.
