The Curly Hair Emoji Rises

November 4, 2015 By Ellen Smith

Although Apple has finally expanded users’ food options with the taco emoji, when it comes to hairstyles, there is only one straight, sleek look. As part of Dove Hair’s Love Your Curls campaign, the beauty brand is launching a curly hair emoji and GIF keyboard to help women embrace their curls.

The Dove Love Your Curls Emojis, which are available for free download in the App Store and Google Play on Nov. 4, will allow users to select skin tone, curl type and hair length.

Emojis have become a form of communication in their own right, sometimes expressing clear thoughts that words aren’t able to disclose.

“Knowing how prevalent and widely used emojis have become, it was saddening to us there remained no reflection of curly hair in the official keyboard, even after recent updates,” Rob Candelino, Dove VP of marketing, tells Mashable. “The best part about using emojis is being able to express a feeling, thought or sentiment with an icon that is representative of you.”

In addition to the launch, Dove has partnered with Twitter so that every time someone tweets #LoveYourCurls, a curly-haired emoji will appear.

These days, more women have been embracing their curls — by ditching keratin treatments, blowouts and straighteners — to allow their waves to flow freely. These new emoji not only reflect that trend but offer a more inclusive form of digital communication.
