Twitter lets you bring in 2016 with a fireworks emoji, if the real thing isn’t enough

December 31, 2015 By Ellen Smith

If you’ll be staring into your phone at midnight this New Year’s Eve, you’ll still be able to see fireworks.

Twitter will celebrate the start of 2016 by activating a special fireworks emoji for people who use the #HappyNewYear hashtag in 38 different languages, including English, Chinese, French, Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew, Portuguese, Spanish, Hindi, Punjabi, Russian and German. The company has also teamed up with New Year’s Eve in Times Square, which is organized by the Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, to display tweets during the countdown festivities.

Some tweets and videos will appear on the screen directly under the Times Square Ball, as well as other screens in the area.

This isn’t the first time Twitter has put together a special New Year’s project. In 2014, the company produced an animation that showed off 24 hours of New Year’s Eve celebrations around the world based on Twitter usage.
