Will There Be an iCar from Apple?

The likelihood of the Apple Car is becoming a bit more probable, as Apple CEO Tim Cook said he believes a “massive change” is coming to the automotive industry.

Speaking with the Wall Street Journal on Monday night, Cook said, “When I look at the automobile, what I see is that software becomes an increasingly important part of the car of the future,” adding, “I do think that industry is at an inflection point for massive change, not just evolutionary change.”

Granted, Cook was led into this statement while speaking of self-driving car technology and Apple’s CarPlay, saying he wants people to have an “iPhone experience” in their car. However, it’s not too farfetched to presume Cook is also subtly hinting at the rumored Apple Car. The reportedly forthcoming Apple EV, which is speculated to be under development as the Project Titan, has been given a 2019 launch date.

That said, Apple has a history of hinting at future markets it aims to enter. For about a year before the Apple Watch was unveiled, Cook made hints to watches. While 2019 is more than a year away, it’s not too unreasonable to presume Cook is subtly indicating Apple’s intention to bring a massive change to the automotive industry — and not just in the dashboards.
